Holiday Safety Tips and Precautions

Get Ready for the Holidays!

The holiday season is almost here. Yes, you read that right…the holidays are coming! The Halloween passed us by in a flash, and now it’s on to the busy holiday season. For most of us, the holidays are about spending time with family and friends (and the presents are nice, too). But before you get swept up into the hustle and bustle of the season, let’s take a quick moment to go over to some safety tips when it comes to your home.

  • Get your furnace checked out. The consistent cold weather is sure to put your furnace to this test this winter. Now is the time to bring out an HVAC professional to evaluate your furnace. This check-up will make sure your furnace is up to par to safely operate for the length of the season.
  • Keep your candles within sight. Everybody likes to bring out their candles during the holiday season. But be sure to set them up in safe places where you can keep an eye on them. Take a look at this full list of safety rules from the National Candle Association.
  • Monitor your cooking appliances. The holidays are full of distractions! But don’t let these distractions get to you in the kitchen. ALWAYS stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, boiling or broiling food. If you are in charge of several appliances in the kitchen, bring someone in to help back you up so that you don’t forget about any of them. Cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home injuries in the country. Take a look at some more safety tips here from the National Fire Protection Association.
  • Be cautious with your holiday lights. There are quite a few things to be aware of with your holiday lights. Never put up lights that are frayed. Make sure not to overload any of your outlets. And of course, never leave your lights on unattended. Check out more holiday light safety tips here from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
