Planning your 2019 Home Improvement Projects

As the New Year approaches, everyone is getting ready for a fresh start! For some of us, that means kicking old habits and leading healthier lifestyles. For others — such as us homeowners — we are planning out our 2019 home improvement projects.

Let’s take a look at some of the main components to consider as we plan out our projects for the New Year.

Time. As you plan out your projects, be sure to keep time in mind. It’s easy to get carried away with big ideas at the beginning of the year. But remember, many home improvement projects take a lot of time. For example, renovations take weeks, and sometimes months. Map out a timeline that works best for you to work around any of the plans that you may already have scheduled for the year — such as vacations and business trips.

Finances. Again, it’s easy to plan big at the beginning of the year. But try not to get too carried away without thinking about your finances first. Plan out a certain amount of money that you want to spend for the entire year; in doing so, you can create budgets that will fit within your annual allocation. Do some online research to get an idea of how much it might cost to carry out certain projects.

Choosing Projects. Picking the right home improvement projects for the New Year can often be more challenging than you might think. Homeowners have never-ending to-do lists! However, it helps to prioritize these projects based on “most important.” Perhaps it’s a safety issue (like an electrical issue). Or it could be more cosmetic (like the installation of a new bay window). Consider a few of these project ideas: a new roof (if your roof is over twenty years old), a new HVAC system (for systems between 10 and 15 years old), and new energy efficient windows (will save on your monthly energy bills).
