The Importance of Yearly Furnace Maintenance
|
When was the last time you had your furnace serviced? If it’s been over a year — or you can’t remember when it was last checked — there’s a good chance that your furnace needs to be looked at by an HVAC professional. Preventative maintenance is your best bet to avoid a complete breakdown of your furnace this winter.
It’s not just broken parts
Often times, we think a broken part is the culprit to a faulty furnace. This is not always the case. Many furnaces have sensors that need to be calibrated and checked every so often. If your sensors are out of place, your system will have problems starting up and shutting down properly. In other words, communication with the thermostat will often get disrupted, messing with the temperature inside your home. Along with these sensor issues, you may also have some serious dust build-up that can cause different parts of your furnace to perform inadequately.
Here are some common issues that you may run into if you don’t get a yearly furnace maintenance check-up:
- Ignition issues/problems with the pilot lighting.
- Dirty or clogged air filter (these should be changed monthly).
- Thermostat problems and malfunctions.
- Issue with the blower motor (could be too much dust in the unit).
- A cracked heat exchanger (a VERY costly repair).
- Problems with the limit switch (this can cause the blower to run a lot more than necessary).
Catch these problems early
Many of the above issues can be avoided with a yearly maintenance check-up. Most importantly, you can save a lot of money and headaches by getting these issues solved early before they turn onto bigger problems down the road. And of course, you never want your heater to break down on you at an inconvenient time, like a snow storm or a major cold front!
